| Willie Macpherson The Elgin Fiddler Book and CD Publication date: 18 April 2006 |
| Willie Macpherson (1920 - 1974)
was one of the outstanding musicians of his generation. A member of
the First Violins of the Scottish National Orchestra for 11 years, he was
also an exceptional fiddler, composer, teacher and champion of the Scots
traditional style. The book, by Richard Bennett, tells of Willie's origins in Elgin, his early career, his postwar struggles and the flowering of his talent before his untimely death. Much of the book comprises Willie's Elgin Collection of twenty Scots fiddle tunes, including such favourites as Brumley Brae and The Coleburn and many others which have never before been published. Willie Macpherson's story gives fascinating historical insights into the musical life of Scotland at the time and Graeme Nairn's design makes the book a visual delight. Coinciding with the publication of the book is the production of a CD under the same title, by Thane Multimedia of Cupar, Fife, comprising recordings of all the tunes published in the book. Many of the tracks are remastered archive recordings of Willie playing his own music; others are new recordings played by Bill Brian and The Elgin Strathspey and Reel Society, the group that Willie Macpherson re-formed and of which he was the first Director. |
